The Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education and Heads of Senior High Schools in the Western Region, through the Ghana Educational Service (GES), have been issued with directives from the Ministry of Finance to draw the attention of occupants of Government bungalows on Rent Payments.
This is to streamline the anomalies with regards to the payment of rent for occupying School or Government bungalows.
According to a reliable source, the Ministry of Finance Circular, “No 13338/05/06NTR CAGD of 15th, May 2006 required that occupants of Government bungalows were expected to pay 10% of their basic salary as rent.
Information gathered indicates that some occupants of Government bungalows, most especially teaching staffs pay as low as GH¢ 15 and GH¢ 20 with payment of defaulters.
Meanwhile, the Western Regional Directorate of the GES is said to have had issues with rent payment on occupants of Government bungalows last year, where the issue popped up at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing.
Moreover, some of the schools in the Western Region according to reliable sources were invited to appear before the Public Accounts Committee over nonpayment of rents.
“GES is not asking any occupants of Government bungalows to pay 10% of basic salary as rent, but it is a directive from the Ministry of Finance”, the source added.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance directive to all teachers and staff being occupants of School or Government bungalows on 10% of their basic salary for rent effectively commenced on 1st, March 2022, even though the secular from the Ministry of Finance dates back in 2006.
The Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education and Heads of Senior High Schools are therefore been urged to ensure that all arrears owed are collected to avoid audit issues.
