Update on new strategies of MoMo fraud

Less than 1 minute Minutes

In the recent years when Mobile money services has been launched, whilst others are comfortably enjoying the services to transact businesses to make their customers, families and friends happy, many others too are busy finding ways to hack into the system to steal these business dudes.

A lot of people have fallen a victim for these scammers and thieves. They did just because they are ignorant of the new trend whilst others were out of curiosity.

How they do it

Personally, I have been contacted several times by these scammers to reverse a certain transaction I have mistakenly undertook which I have not too.

Some will go by showing you procedures to reverse a wrong transactions. And if you listen to them very well, you will realised the method is a scam.

Others too will call by congratulating you for winning a certain prize from your network service provider which is an outright lie.

Many at times too, they will send you a mobile money transaction message from their personal number and confuses you to send it back to them. So should you have enough money on your wallet up to what they claimed sent, you will end up sending it to them. Any subsequent calls to them will never go through.

As a lot of people have known these tricks of them by the awareness created by the network service providers, families and friends, so they (the scammers) have taken another dimension. This time around, their target is the mobile money vendors. They will call the vendors and then ask if they have E-cash. If the response sounds positive, they will ask you the vendor to send them an amount to complete a transaction and tell you they are on their way to your joint (office) to give you a physical cash. If you insist they bring the money first, they will tell you the customer is an old person and he/she is waiting so send it for them to complete the transactions.

Hmmmmm! It’s pity when people are seen trying to steal others using dubious ways.

My big question to the various network service providers is that, ‘How do they (fraudsters) know that, this particular number belongs to this MoMo vendor?’

What to do when this scams and frauds visits you

When you happened to be contacted by these fraudsters and scammers,

  • Report to your Network Service Provider (NSP) as soon as possible if you have mistakenly and successfully sent the money or do whatever you have been asked to do.
  • Hang up the call on them and refuse any subsequent calls from the same number.
  • Some times, you can entertain them by engaging them by wasting their time. Having unnecessary talks with them or ask them to hold for you to attend briefly to an important duty. (My favorite though)

With all these tips, I believe we can be vigilant and protect our money.

Protect yourself also by not sharing your MoMo PIN with others.
