Residents of Essikado, a community in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the western region will soon have no worries to travel outside the community to have access to medication prescribed by health professionals at the Essikado Government Hospital.
For a decade now, residents within Essikado and nearby communities who visit Essikado Government Hospital have been traveling to either Takoradi beyond to get medications at pharmacies and over-the-counter medicines shops after prescriptions made by doctors on health status.
The Essikado Government Hospital serves catchment areas including Inchaban, Essipon, Sofokrom, Eshiem, Ntwaban Nkwanta, Sekondi, and its environs.
However, a surgeon who is also an indigene of Essikado, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, seeing the difficulties and stress that residents and visitors who visit the Hospital pass through before getting their prescribed medicines, decided to construct an edifice in the community.
On her daily routine visit, she found that the biggest hospital and referral center within the Essikado-Ketan constituency was Essikado Government Hospital, yet they don’t have a proper outside pharmacy “except for licensed drug dealers who only sell over the counter drugs”.
However when a sick person attended the hospital and the hospital pharmacy did not have the said medicine because the hospital pharmacy only stocked a few medicines the patient is required to travel to either Sekondi, Kojokrom, or Takoradi to purchase the medicines at additional transport and precious time cost.
This scenario worsens when the needed drug is an emergency drug necessary for resuscitation or other emergency services.
The lack of a pharmacy with a wider array of medicines often leads to medication non-compliance and the consequences of this can be dire.
Given this, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah who hails from the Essikado royal family began the construction of an Ultra-Modern facility to serve various functions.
Part of the Mall at Essikado will house a 500 capacity “Class A” event center so that people after the completion of the structure will not have to have events on street corners and blockage of streets on weekends.
Moreover, with the Second floor it would be a short term stay grade A housing for people who often comes to Essikado community for events and funerals without having hotels or short term stay housing.
Dr. Grace added that people over 80 years will receive their medication for free and we will give free monthly home Health visits for the bedridden”,
Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah who has Essikado-Ketan at heart speaking to Kantanka News Reporter Benjamin Bray pledges to continue to serve the other towns within the constituency with much-needed projects.
The construction of the Mall at Essikado after its completion will have an Ultra-Modern Pharmacy, Event and Youth Center, and Stores.
