The Youth of Nzemaland under the umbrella of the Nzema Koyele Eku in the Ellembelle District of the western region has said the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Dr. Ben K. D. Asante is a threat to Nzema Development.
Highlighting their concerns in the daunting challenges engulfing the community, Nzema District remain among the poorest and undeveloped district irrespective of the many resources and wealth that emanate from the districts.
According to the secretary to the group, Robert Morkeh, the Tano Basin in the Nzema enclave which currently among Ghana’s offshore basins yielded a whopping of $696 in revenue to the Government of Ghana in 2020 in terms of vast oil presence in commercial quantity.
“The Tano Basin was strangely named West Cape Three Points, and setting up of the Gas industry also named as Ghana Gas for reasons unbeknownst to us”, he added.
Meanwhile the oil find on Nzema soil is not reflecting in the lives of the people in terms of
employment, scholarships for needy but brilliant students, health facilities, good roads, school infrastructures, modern market among others.
The Youth of Nzema alleges that Ghana Gas and other players in the oil and gas industry undertake giant projects elsewhere and dole out a whopping amount of money to other individuals and institutions, while local Nzema communities wallow in poverty and deprivation.
Furthermore, they are demanding that GNPC, Ghana Gas, Aker Energy, Tullow, Kosmos, Eni among other oil companies operating in the oil and Gas sector in the three Nzema Districts present their Corporate Social Intervention programs for the communities, youth and their representatives for their awareness and input, quota of employment opportunities be set aside for indigenes, especially given the native impact of the operations of the Oil and Gas players on fishing and farming in the area.
Again, the name West Cape Three Points be changed to Tano Basin or Nzema Oil Field and that Ghana Gas plant renamed NZEMA GAS so that Nzema can be seen to be among the areas where oil and gas are produced and proposed Petroleum Hub to be established in Jomoro to develop Petrochemical and allied industry to service the Oil and Gas industry in Nzema be done in a transparent, fair and equitable manner to benefit the community and Ghana.
This was made known to Atinka TV reporter when hundreds of Nzema Youth marched off the principal streets of Nkroful and Essiama with written inscriptions placed on placards demanding Nzemaland fair share of the national cake distributed to Regions including Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
Some of the inscriptions written and placed on placards include Ghana Gas, We Need University, Better Roads and Referer Hospital In Nzemaland, Mr. Asante Nzemaland Is Not Your Family Property Stay Away, Awulaemo, Please Be United the Youth Still Love You, No Nzema Head Chief, No Other Chief among others.
