“Boosting FDA Operations”
Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, a ranking member of Parliament, has emphasized the importance of establishing a dedicated fund by the government to support the operations of the Food & Drugs Authority (FDA) and enhance its performance.
In a news report from Opemsuo FM, a Kumasi-based radio station, on Saturday, July 8, 2023, Hon. Akandoh highlighted the numerous challenges faced by the FDA, hindering its effectiveness.
One of the major challenges he pointed out is financial constraints. He suggested that if the government establishes a fund specifically for the FDA, the organization would be better equipped to compete with foreign counterparts and carry out its duties effectively.
Hon. Akandoh further drew attention to the issue of expired goods flooding the market and other shops, which the FDA struggles to address due to limited resources and insufficient staff. Additionally, he highlighted the agency’s failure to conduct thorough research on imported foreign products to ensure their safety.
Furthermore, he mentioned the lack of oversight by the FDA when it comes to monitoring and prosecuting local manufacturers who produce substandard products that violate the agency’s regulations.

Drawing a comparison with advanced countries, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh underscored the significance of research conducted by the Food & Drugs sector in ensuring the production of high-quality goods that safeguard the health of citizens. He emphasized that in Ghana, the situation appears to be the opposite.
Recognizing that the overall economic development of the nation is dependent on the well-being of its people, Hon. Akandoh urged the government to establish a special fund for the FDA as a matter of national interest. This, he believes, would enable the agency to function optimally and save lives.
