AHANTA WEST: UPPER DIXCOVE TRADITIONAL COUNCIL ARREST GALAMSEY KINGPIN AT AHANTA BANSO

The Upper Dixcove Traditional Council on Saturday, 21 January 2023, arrested a Galamsey Kingpin (name withheld) at Ahanta Banso in the Ahanta West Municipality and seized one excavator

Nananom, led by the Asafo Group Monday converged at the Agona Nkwanta Police Station demanding immediate prosecution of the said Galamsey kingpin who is already in the custody of the police at Agona Ahanta.

The Nananom and the Ahanta West Police team moved to Morrison, a community in the Ahanta West Municipality to inspect the galamsey site and the excavator which has been hidden in the community.

The suspect has since been handed over to the police at Agona Nkwanta pending investigations.

Speaking to the media, the traditional leaders are calling for the arrest and prosecution of whoever gave permit or authority to the galamseyer as well as the confiscation of the earth moving machines and other equipment used in the illegal activities.

They also want the illegal miners to reclaim and restore the destroyed farmlands and water bodies, and also pay adequate compensation to the affected farmers in the area they operated.

Chief of Ahanta Banso, NANA AGYEI – II indicated that the illegal miners have been operating on his land since last year and efforts to stop them never materialized until the community decided to deal with the issue on their own.

Meanwhile, Nana Emu VIII, chief of Kwesikrom in Ahanta West also cautioned Chiefs who are condoning such illegality to stop or face their wrath.
