Ghanaians woke up this morning to see that the price of their beloved breakfast, Waakye, has been affected by the heavy fall of the cedi and the constant increase in the prices of goods and commodities.
The new prices pegged by a particular waakye seller were quite staggering and have taken people on social by surprise. According to the unknown seller, she had to increase the cost of the food in order to keep the business going. She also pleaded with her dearly beloved customers to bear with her.
On a list that showed the increase in various accompaniments of the waakye, one could see that the price of eggs has increased again. Fish alone now started from 7 cedis with chicken starting from 8 cedis. The waakye itself is now sold for 7 cedis upward.
It is not known yet where this waakye base is but our guess is that it will be in Accra where the economic crisis is being felt the most. From the prices listed, the waakye base is possibly a restaurant, not the ones located on the roadsides.
A similar price hike earlier revealed that ‘koko’ sellers across the country had also increased their prices. One ‘koose’ was now selling at 1 cedi, a sharp jump from 50p just a few months ago. Wanting a disposable cup for your ‘koko’ would amount to an astonishing 4 cedi.
