32 Million Plantain Seedlings To Be Produced By KUMAD Global Limited and AFARINICK Company Limited

KUMAD Global Limited and AFARINICK Company Limited in the Suaman Dadieso District of the Western North Region is expected to produce about 32 Million Plantain Seedlings by the end of 2022.

These plantain seedlings would be used for subsequent cocoa rehabilitation programmes by Ghana COCOBOD.

The purpose of harvesting of plantain suckers by the aforementioned companies was for Government of Ghana and COCOBOD to get plantain seedlings for cocoa farmers to place them under better condition of livelihood after their cocoa trees were cut down for rehabilitation of being affected by Swollen Virus Disease.

According to the project leader, Mr. Beloved Mensah Djerku, one plantain sucker can be propagated into over hundred seedlings with minimum of 25 when under a good condition.

The project leader indicated that plantain suckers were brought from Asante Akyim Agogo as they prepared, planted them in saw dust with transparent poly bags, covering with transparent poly sheet.

Again, the plantain suckers being put into chambers were being watered for three weeks with sprouting and harvested in the forth week.

He said KUMAD Global Limited and AFARINICK Company Limited use solar heat, moisture and smoked saw dust to nurse the suckers with no chemical application.

“If you use the heat and you expose the primary bags that are attached to the sucker and you destroy the epical dominance where the cells multiply and grow into full plant”, he added.

Mr. Beloved emphasized that the KUMAD Global Impact Limited and Afarinick Company Limited are expected to harvest 117 million plantain seedlings by the end of 2023 from 400 hundred acres of land at Suaman Dadieso District.

Moreover, the Plantain Seedling Nursery Site is currently having (Sector A and B) together with 7.606Ha of area size, 3.641Ha of nursery area and 693 total chambers.

The establishment of the Plantain Seedling Nursery Site situated at Suaman Dadieso District in the Western North Region commenced in December 2021, with transplanting in February 2022.

Mr. Joseph Boahen Aidoo, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana COCOBOD after having seen the magnitude of the plantain suckers commended the effort of KUMAD Global Impact Limited and Afarinick Company Limited for applying all the techniques on plantain seedling nursery.
